Dhole Conservation FAQs
Why Dholes?
We get asked this a lot, why choose to help an animal that no one has really heard of? That's the exact reason why! With so many species out there needing help, many require lots of financial help to return to areas they once roamed. The dhole is different. What do dholes need to recover? They need a chance. The habitat is opening up now that tiger and other conservation efforts have opened the lands. Canids are extremely adaptable and given the chance, dhole numbers can increase. That’s why dholes, because we know we can save them all they need is a voice.
Do you take volunteers?
Right now we have very limited and specialized areas for volunteering. We are looking to work with an educator to help with growing our education and outreach program. We are also looking for someone with digital and visual effects to help us with a new online classroom set up. Feel free to reach out if you wish to help: [email protected]
Projects
How do you pick your projects?
Our project choice is pretty basic if we can help in some way we will. We do give priority to those projects in range lands that are under studied, projects that focus on dhole ecology that is not well known yet, or on research techniques that could be used to better understand dhole movement, numbers, or ecology.
How do you fund projects?
Most of our funding comes from private donations from our support base. We have a general fund that supports our operational costs which is low. Anything in the general fund can be used for funding projects if the board decides to. Other methods for funding are to be posted on our website where supporters are able to donate directly to the program. No fees are tacked on to those donations so 100% of all funds going through those portals go to those programs.
Education
What programs do you offer?
We have a few lesson plans that are free to teachers and educators. These lesson plans are geared towards different age levels and all have learning objectives that come along with them. They can be taught stand-alone or joined to an existing lesson plan. We also do virtual presentations there are a few set ones outlined in the education section but we also can also customize one to your group's age and learning objectives.
Gift Shop
Why don’t you have your own shop? Why do you use ETSY?
We use ETSY quite simply because it's easy to maintain and for tax reporting. Being a 501(c)3 doesn’t exclude us from collecting and reporting sales tax. Many of the online shop programs that do this are expensive to set up and have monthly fees on top of the online payment fees, ETSY is cheaper in that regard and plus shoppers get the added protection of ETSY buyer protection.
Why don’t you have more inventory?
Right now the gift shop runs out of our founder's apartment. As you can imagine full-time jobs, hobbies, and pets leave little room for an extensive inventory. We did use an online drop shipper for a while but ran into supply chain issues and not being able to do quality control on the items before they shipped out.
Why aren’t items from your Bonfire fundraisers on your gift shop?
Bonfire items are limited-time fundraising shirts. We do hope to offer these in the future. If you are interested in a shirt from a past Bonfire run send an email to [email protected] and we can arrange for that.
Can I request a special item?
Please send us an email with any item you would like to see. We are always interested in expanding our gift shop items. We got so many requests for plush dholes that we finally found a vendor to make them for us, so if you ask you might just get what you are looking for.
Locations
Where are you located?
Our admin and headquarters are in San Diego, CA.
Do you work everywhere there are dholes?
We do try and work in all the range countries that we can. We are a small organization at the movement but we have big dreams and ambitions.
